What is Local Hack Day?

Join us on December 1st, 2018 for MLH's Local Hack Day, a global hackathon and celebration of learning, building, and sharing! Whether you're a first timer who is learning to program or you go to hackathons every weekend, everyone is welcome to participate!

This is MLH's 5th year organizing Local Hack Day. In 2017, the event brought out more than 6,000 participants across 34 countries and 236 cities around the world. This year's event is shaping up to be the biggest one yet!

What is a hackathon?

Hackathons are learning focused invention marathons where participants dream up fun, interesting projects and work in small teams to bring them to life over the course of the event.

When you're not working on your project, there are plenty of other things to do like attending educational workshops, making friends, or showing off what you're learning or building. At Local Hack Day you can do these with other participants at your location or participants around the world at other locations!


Schedule

This Local Hack Day location will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm on December 1st, 2018. All times are in the local timezone.

9:00am - Check-in Begins
9:30am - Opening Ceremony
10:00am - Hacking Begins
10:30am - MLH Localhost Workshop - Your First Website
12:00pm - Lunch
3:30pm - Hacking Ends/Demos Begin
4:00pm - Closing/Awards Ceremony
4:30pm - Cleanup & Event Ends


Additional Information

General Info

A hackathon for around 60 students from the Greater Toronto Area, consisting of high-school and university students, free-to-attend.

Prizes

The prizes are for best game, most useful app, and most innovative design. Participants may use any language they want to create a graphical, end-user-oriented application.

Venue

The venue is hosted by Angus Glen Community Center. Free parking will be available.

Food & Snacks

Please bring $5 for lunch.

Who can attend Local Hack Day?

Everyone is welcome to participate in Local Hack Day regardless of experience level, student status, or age. However, some Local Hack Day locations may have restrictions on who is able to participate at their specific site, which you can find on the event's registration page. If you don't qualify to attend the site you are interested in, please find an alternative one nearby and if there is not one, consider organizing one yourself!

What if I can't code?

Everyone is welcome at Local Hack Day regardless of their coding experience. Many participants use Local Hack Day as an opportunity to learn some coding skills and network with other beginners. Many Local Hack Day locations also provide free technical workshops that you can attend to learn new skills.

Is there a code of conduct?

We want to make sure that MLH Local Hack Day events create a safe and welcoming environment for attendees and organizers. For this reason the MLH Code of Conduct should be followed throughout the duration of each event.

Will there be food?

Food availability varies depending on location. However, most locations do not serve food. Please read your location’s page carefully to determine whether or not food will be provided. If it is not, you should pack a lunch, dinner, and any snacks you might need throughout the day.

Who organizes Local Hack Day?

Local Hack Day is organized by Major League Hacking (MLH). Local community volunteers are responsible for organizing the individual locations of Local Hack Day around the world that you'd be attending.

How much does it cost?

It's free to participate in MLH's Local Hack Day. You'll be responsible for covering any costs associated with getting yourself to the venue, any supplies you need for your project, and any food or drinks beyond what is being provided as indicated on the location's page.
